Enemies become more aggressive as the game progresses, increasing their number of projectiles and diving down at a faster rate. Stages are indicated by emblems located at the bottom-right of the screen. Some enemies can morph into new enemy types with different attack patterns, with one even taking the form of the Galaxian Flagship. The ship will return in a later level as part of the formation. However, destroying a Boss Galaga with a captured ship while it is in formation will instead cause the fighter to turn against the player and act as an alien. Shooting it down as it dives towards the player will result in the captured ship being rescued, and it will join the player's ship, transforming it into a "dual-fighter" with additional firepower and a larger hitbox. Should additional lives remain, the player has an opportunity to shoot down the Boss Galaga holding the captured ship. ![]() There is an entire fandom revolving entirely around its score attack features, with combos and score multipliers and a surprisingly punishing time limit. Except that’s not how you’re supposed to play, is it? NiGHTS’s levels are meant to be played again and again and again. It’s weird to say now, because as a kid the game seemed epic, infinite, mysterious, but in fact the whole thing can be banged out in about an hour, even if you’re not very good at it. Each level has four “mares” or tracks, starting with short loops that can be completed in a matter of seconds and ending with long circuits involving toboggan rides, rollercoasters, and getting shot out of cannons. Functionally, NiGHTS is a 2D side-scroller, its 3D environments reduced to a flat plane on rails in which the player is hurtling its avatar constantly to the right, like Sonic with floatier gravity. ![]() The story goes that Naka was inspired to create a game which mimicked the sensation of taking off in an airplane. How do I even explain NiGHTS? There’s the Wikipedia approach: NiGHTS into Dreams was a Sega Saturn game developed by OG Sonic Team luminaries Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Takashi Iizuka. I’m not saying that no cishet person has ever played NiGHTS, but I’d put good money on them being a vanishingly small minority. You sparkly-eyed, garish, androgynous clown monstrosity. There are a few things from my childhood that, looking at now, make me go: “How the hell did I not realize sooner that I was astonishingly, flamingly queer?”įor me it was NiGHTS.
